Understanding Fares in London’s Zones

The London Underground (Tube) fare system is based on a zone structure, where fares depend on the number of zones you travel through. London is divided into 9 fare zones, with Zone 1 covering the city centre and higher-numbered zones extending outward.

Fares vary depending on:

  • The zones you travel between.
  • Whether you travel during peak or off-peak hours.
  • Your payment method (Oyster card, contactless, Travelcard, or paper ticket).

Tap in and tap Out

If you have a contactless card, Apple Pay or Android Pay you don’t even have to buy a ticket before travelling. You can tap your card or mobile device to the Oyster card reader and go through the barriers. You will be charged an adult’s pay as you go fare with the included benefit of daily and weekly capping (as long as you use the same card/ device every time).

Oyster card & other ways to pay

The Oyster card is one of the easiest ways to pay for transport in London. You can buy one from the ticket machines at any Tube, Overground or TfL Rail station. They’re also available from Visitor Centres and can be ordered online if you live in the UK.

To use an Oyster card, touch it against the yellow pads on the barriers to “tap in”. A green “enter” will appear and the barrier will open for you.

You can also buy a range of paper tickets from ticket machines including 1 Day, 7 Day, 1 to 6 month and annual Travel cards. To use a paper ticket, slide it in to the slot at the front of the barrier, face up. The barrier will say “enter” and let you through.

Penalty Fares

If you don’t touch in and out correctly using contactless (card or device) or an Oyster card, or you don’t have a valid ticket, you may be charged a penalty fare. Your ticket must cover your entire journey and all zones you travel in. If you’re using pay as you go, you must have enough credit to pay for your entire journey. If you’re using a mobile device, it must have enough battery to last your journey. Penalty Fare is £100, but is reduced to £50 if you pay within 21 days.

Adult single

A single trip on the London Tube is a one-way ticket that allows you to travel within a chosen zoneYou can buy single tickets as paper tickets or pay as you go using an Oyster card or contactless payment. If you are paying for your journey using contactless tap in and tap out, your fare is automatically calculated when you tap out.

Pay as you go caps

A cap limits how much you pay for all your journeys in one day or week.

You can make as many journeys as you like and when all your fares add up to a certain amount, you won’t be charged more (your fare is automatically capped). Remember to touch in and out with the same card or device.

Travel cards

A Travelcard (in the zones it’s valid for) gives you unlimited travel at any time on bus, Tube, Tram, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail services in London.

Travelcard season tickets

You can buy a 7 Day, Monthly and Annual Travelcard, or one with start and end dates you choose (any length between 1½ and 10½ months).

  • 7 Day Travelcards give you seven days’ travel for the price of five days.
  • Monthly Travelcards are generally cheaper than buying four consecutive 7 Day Travelcards. They give a saving of 11% compared with continuing use of 7 Day Travelcards. For example, over a year, 12 Monthly Travelcards cost 11% less than 52 7 Day Travelcards.
  • Annual Travelcards give a saving of 13% compared with continuing use of Monthly Travelcards. So you get 12 months travel for the price of 10½. Alternatively they give a 23% saving compared with continuing use of 7 Day Travelcards, meaning you get 52 weeks for the price of 40.

Note that with pay as you go on Contactless or Oyster, Monday to Sunday capping, like 7 Day Travelcards, can give you seven days’ travel for the price of five days.
