Why are we trialling a new map?

Our mission at Mapway is to create the easiest journey plan for the people who use our apps, and that means having the best map for the job.

We love the original iconic Tube Map, but we know that there are some things that it just can’t do.

When it was first conceived, Harry Beck’s original map of the London Underground would only have been seen on display in large format at Tube stations, and later in the printed maps that are still given out today.

It was originally designed for print purposes, which means it can’t do the things that an interactive digital map can.  As new lines have been added over the years, it has begun to look cramped and difficult to read. We have created our new map from scratch without the legacy limitations.

Digital First

We make maps for many of the largest rail networks in cities around the world. Our signature Interactive Map style is developed to show our users the most up-to-date information on the move.

We want to create the best map for London by taking the familiar Tube Map and reimagining it. You’ll notice some visual changes which we hope will make it easier for you to find your way across the city.

This new London map is our first try at a map that can show you:

  • More of London, for example: Gatwick and Luton Airport
  • Journey plans in a simpler way
  • More complex interchange information
  • Helpful information such as the nearest green spaces
  • More geographically correct idea of where the stations are, which is useful for walking / cycling routes
  • The most up-to-date line status/ station closures / journey information

Suggestions please!

First things first, we are not going to remove the iconic official TfL Tube Map from our apps anytime soon, as we know that some people just won’t want to use anything else.

However, we’re still working on our map and as we develop it we want to know from you how you think we can make it better.

If you have time to trial our London Underground Beta Map we would love to know your thoughts:

  • Do you find it easier to use?
  • How can we improve it for you?

You can easily send a message to us by tapping on the suggestion box icon in the bottom left corner of the Beta Map tab in the app.
