Back to blog Update on 04/10/17: The Tube Strike has been called off. A union representative has said that “sufficient progress” had been made. However please be aware that a separate rail strike is still due to go ahead. This will affect Southern, Merseyrail, Arriva Rail North and Greater Anglia trains on Thursday. A Tube Strike is planned to go ahead this Thursday (5th October). The Strike is due to a disagreement between the drivers’ union Aslef and Transport for London. Tube Strikes are never fun but we’re here to help you stay in-the-know with the latest information. So here are your Tube Strike questions answered.

When is the Tube Strike happening?

Officially the walkout starts at 12:01am on Thursday. Some lines will stop running earlier than normal on Wednesday evening but the major effect of the strike won’t be seen until the early hours of Thursday morning, when trains would typically start running. There will also be a knock-on effect to the Friday morning services. The timings for each day look like this: tube-strike-5th-oct

Which lines are affected?

Most Tube lines will be closed during the strike so you will need to find alternative modes of travel. No specific lines have been named yet so we will update with more information as we learn more. But most London Underground lines are likely to be affected. We can confirm however, that the following will be operating as normal on Thursday:
  • TfL Rail

  • London Overground

  • DLR

Can I get live updates?

If you have a question, you’ll be able to reach us on Twitter at @TubeMapLondon. We’ll be keeping an eye on things there and doing our best to keep you updated with the latest Tube Strike news. Whenever something major like this happens, we recommend checking the live Line Status in the Tube Map app and planning real time routes to see which options are available. The real time journey planner uses live TfL data so you can get the most accurate information about a route.

What alternative travel modes are available?

To help Londoners get around, TfL are putting more buses and Santander Cycles in to service. National Rail trains are also available however buses and trains are both expected to be busier than normal. Be sure to check back to this page as we get closer to Thursday morning. Tube Strikes have been known to change at the last minute and we’ll be making changes as and when they happen.
